The Journey to New Generation Practices

Photo of Becky DeGrossaIt Started Where?

Looking back, I’d have to say that it all started in 1983 when I joined IBM. I had a degree in computer science, but my previous job was just being tucked away in a cube, programming. IBM gave me the opportunity to become an expert in a given area (and to travel internationally), and then lead teams of people to deliver solutions to paying clients. Did I mention international travel? In 1987 I left the technical ranks and entered management, where I spent most of the rest of my career. Continually, over the 20 years in the tech world when I wasn’t traveling internationally : ), I felt a yearning to do something more meaningful. A two-year training program in meditation widened the chasm between my career and my yearnings. I left IBM in 2003 and entered the graduate program in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology at Naropa University.

The Beginnings of Merging Technology and Helping

Even while in graduate school, I created a website and started a business as a divorce coach. I began to study how internet marketing worked in the "softer" industries. Based on what I was learning, I rewrote my website, entirely. And now, based on what I know, I need to redo it again! Yes, entirely! Seven months out of graduate school, my divorce and therapy work brought me a lot of satisfaction and a good income, but something was still missing for me. During a supervision session, I came to my senses about my new life as a therapist. I needed a unique balance. You see, I absolutely love my therapy and divorce clients. But for me, the 30-35 billable hour weeks still left me hungry for something else. I was really appreciative of my success, and still loved sitting across from awesome people doing amazing work, but I had an itch that wasn’t being scratched. And that was… to keep building something bigger. But what could I build if I didn’t want more clients? I decided to limit my client load to 15-20 and to focus the rest of my passion on building a business to teach therapists how to build a business. This would blend my desire to “do good” with my desire to build, on a larger scale.

From Technology… To Helping… To Helping With Technology

I wanted to make sure, however, that what I offered was: Implement-able by non-technical therapists Ethical and “soft” (as opposed to a “hard sales” approach) Appealing to therapist’s personalities (the need for a lot of extroversion wouldn’t fly, I thought!) Up-to-date and smart.

The Trip That Brought It All Together

I had already been working with a great business coach, Molly Gordon (www.authenticpromotion.com) Molly teaches small business folks how to sell without selling their souls. In May of 2007, Molly and I both splurged and spent three days in Campbell, CA with Sean D’Souza (www.psychotactics.com). Those three days with Molly and Sean (and the other amazing business folks there) were life-changing for me, because not only did I get to learn from experienced, accomplished internet marketers, but I was thrilled to get to know Molly better and to experience Sean in person. (Newsflash: all megabucks marketers aren’t greedy!) But the biggest gift from that trip was that I stumbled upon a system that fit therapists perfectly. So I went home and got to work. My learning is your earning From the start of my quest to use technology in marketing private practices, I have spent thousands of hours and dollars. What I have finally found is a system that will allow you to earn more money… by helping more people… while still being yourself.

From the beginning, I knew Becky was super-competent. Becky gets it - she really understands what works and what doesn’t both in terms of technology and in terms of the psychology of caring for the client in search of the right therapist. She's an extraordinary resource. Even though I've already been very successful marketing myself online, I learn from her every time we talk or exchange strategies.

I like working with Becky because she thinks clearly and out-ofthe- box, understands multiple perspectives, and is decisive. She also follows-through on her commitments. Therapists would really benefit by working with Becky, as she knows how market herself successfully! In a short time, she’s built a full therapy practice. Becky’s work is unique because she comes from a consulting background. She understands how to build and grow a business, as well as how to deliver therapy services.

I learned of your course from my business partner, who was going to take the training, and I wondered if I really needed to take it or if I could just learn it from him. I'm so glad I took it, because this course has completely changed the way I think about marketing. We had even hired a professional marketer in the past!

This is so much better. You teach a very easy step-by-step, practical application. Other people will lecture, or do it for you. This is the first time that I've been walked through the process, and each step of the way, I've completed assignments that have clearly demonstrated and reinforced that this is what you do. I feel so empowered!

I have already recommended you to others. You are very talented as a teacher and very caring and compassionate as a person. I can tell that you really want us all to be successful by how you stay connected with us.

When I got behind, you were very encouraging and supportive. And with other people in the class, struggling at times, you've gone way beyond what most teachers would do. Thanks, Becky, for making this so incredibly easy.
